On February 12th, Jennifer Weiss met with Cherie Poucher, Director of the Wake County Board of Elections, to file for re-election to the North Carolina House of Representatives. "It has been an honor and a privilege to represent the people of Wake County for the last four terms and I look forward to continuing to work to improve the quality of life in our state," said Weiss. Improving Oversight of Hazardous Waste Facilities
Representative Weiss was a primary sponsor of House Bill 36, which will improve the oversight of hazardous waste facilities. The legislation will require companies that store hazardous waste to provide more information to state and local governments and that details on these facilities and the waste being stored are easily available. She's shown here with Governor Easley as he signs the bill into law. "This legislation adds important oversight to make sure citizens are protected, public agencies are fully informed and businesses appropriately regulated," said State Representative Weiss. "We will continue to pay close attention to the needs of communities where these facilities are located so citizens are safe in their homes." In the CommunityThis year, Jennifer is continuing to speak at and participate in events across Wake County, including: Greater Raleigh Chamber of CommerceJennifer gave a briefing to members of the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce on issues facing the General Assembly during the short session. Holocaust CommemorationJennifer was honored to participate in the annual Holocaust Commemoration Service sponsored by the North Carolina Council on the Holocaust at Meredith College. Indian American Forum for Political EducationJennifer and Rep. Ty Harrell gave a legislative briefing to the Indian American Forum for Political Education at the Morrisville Hindu Center. NAWBO Annual Public Policy ForumJennifer was a panelist at the National Association of Women Business Owners Annual Public Policy Forum in Raleigh. NC Women UnitedJennifer was a guest speaker at the NC Women United press conference where she spoke about the Adult Care Home rating legislation and about the Home and Community Care Block Grant. Cary Elementary SchoolJennifer participated in Celebrity Reader Day and helped celebrate the "Star Readers" at Cary Elementary School. She visited two classes and shared some of her favorite Dr. Seuss stories. Method Civic LeagueJennifer was the guest speaker at a meeting of the Method Civic League in Raleigh. Following an informative presentation by Rev. Renee Bethea on the history of the Method Community and Civic League, Jennifer spoke with leaders from the Method community about the 2007 Session of the General Assembly and about upcoming issues at the legislature. NC Science OlympiadJennifer addressed students, teachers and parents at the NC Science Olympiad Awards Ceremonies and presented awards to the winners in grades 6-12 from schools across North Carolina. HKonJJennifer attended the second annual Historic Thousands on Jones Street rally at Chavis Park sponsored by the NC NAACP, AARP, the North Carolina Justice Center, NC Council of Churches and dozens of other advocacy groups. Triangle Radio Reading ServiceJennifer and other volunteers read news articles on the air at the Triangle Radio Reading Service, an organization whose mission is to provide services to people with visual impairment, blindness and physical disabilities. Raleigh Charter High SchoolJennifer met with 10th grade students from Raleigh Charter High School at the General Assembly and talked with them about the legislative process. Preserving Assets: Foreclosure Mitigation TrainingAt this training sponsored by the NC Association of Community Development Corporations, Jennifer talked with participants about the home foreclosure problem facing North Carolina and the work of the Select Committee on Rising Home Foreclosures. Leadership CaryJennifer spoke on a legislative panel to members of the Cary Chamber of Commerce Leadership Cary group. Wake County Democratic WomenJennifer and Laura Leslie of WUNC Radio were the featured speakers at the Wake County Democratic Women's February meeting.
